The NWI Contractors Association is a trade association of construction companies working in the commercial, industrial, heavy and highway, public works and institutional construction markets in Northwest Indiana. Regular members are contractors, industrial or commercial, who employ at least one of the crafts for which the Association holds the Bargaining Rights. Associate members are vendors that service the Union Contractors of Northwest Indiana.

The Association was formed in 2006 by the merger of two of the region’s most prominent contractor associations, the Calumet Builders Association and the Industrial Contractors and Builders Association of Indiana Inc.

All contractor members of the Association employ craftsmen from various building trade unions in Northwest Indiana. The NWI Contractors Association also has within its membership associate firms that work closely with the region’s contractors in the region.

The NWI Contractors Association negotiates labor agreements with seven building trades crafts in Northwest Indiana. These are:

  • International Union of Operating Engineers Local #150
  • Cement Masons Local Union #692 – Areas #165, #406 and #438
  • Technical Engineering Divisions, Local Union 130, U.A.
  • The Indiana/Kentucky Regional Council of Carpenters
  • The International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Ironworkers Local #395
  • The Laborers’ International Union of North American Local Unions #41 and #81
  • Teamsters Union Local #142

The labor contractors negotiated by the Association are utilized by over 500 contractors working in the Northwest Indiana region.

The Association also appoints trustees to the pension, health and welfare, and apprenticeship funds for the unions with which it negotiates. In addition, the Association appoints management representatives to grievance panels to hear and rule on grievances filed under the contracts the Association negotiates. And, the Association appoints the members of the Board of the Construction Advancement Foundation of Northwest Indiana.

The Association holds meetings monthly on the third Tuesday of the month at 5:30 p.m. During these meetings the members discuss a wide variety of issues important to the construction industry of Northwest Indiana. Many of these issues relate to labor relations matters.

Meetings are held at local restaurants and dinner is provided by the Association.
